Palani is one of the six padaiveedus or temples of Lord Subrahmanya and the most famous one of the six temples, the other five being Swami malai, Thiruchendur, Thiruttani, Thirupparankundram and Pazhamudhircholai.
The shrine of Lord Thandayuthapani is placed at the top of a hill about 500 feet high, There are many shrines and springs (theerthams) surrounding the hill. One of these shrines is a well known one called 'Aavinankudi' situated at the base ofthe Palani hills, This shrine gets mentioned in old religious verses and is believed to be more than 2000 years old. Some of the visiting devotees go round the hill first before climbing to see the Lord Dhandayuthapani on top of the hill. There are about 690 steps to climb to the top of the hill. There are many shrines on the way for various deities with resting places where the devotees can rest for sometime while they climb to the temple at the top. There are large corridors on all sides of the temple with various buildings attached and the whole complex is situated at n altitude of 1086 ft.
How to Reach Palani Palani is located in Madurai District of Tamil Nadu at about 112 km from Madurai and 152 km from Trichi. Palani is located about 5 km from the railway station on the Dindugal - Coimbatore line of the Southern Railway. There are bus services from all the major towns in Tamilnadu as well as from the adjoining state of Kerala.
